BEAD SOCIETY OF CHARLOTTESVILLE
2008-2009 MEETING PROGRAMS

The Charlottesville Bead Society meets on the second
Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in St. Marks Church at
the corner of Alderman & Ivy Roads

September 10 - Summer Challenge Display.  Annual planning
session.

October 8 – Porcelain Pendants.  Barbara Tilley will bring
porcelain clay for a hands-on project.  We will each make a
pendant using tools and supplies that Barbara will provide.
She will take the pendants that we make and fire and glaze
them and bring the finished pendants to next month's
meeting.  We will also welcome the owner of Lazy Daisy
Pottery who will answer questions and will have some
supplies for sale.  Should be lots of fun.....and an interactive
way of learning a new craft that supplements one we already
know and love.

November 12 – Soldering Savvy.   Leslie Yowell will
demonstrate soldering techniques.  Then Barbara Tilley will
show us how to use those simple techniques to make
charming pendants with glass slides.  Barbara will bring
slides – you should bring little pictures, ribbons, mementos,
whatever your heart desires.  You will learn to sandwich your
mementos between the slides, wrap the slides with copper
foil and solder them together. Please contact Leslie Yowell if
you have soldering equipment we can use at the meeting.
Bring your beads for the annual Design Detective Challenge!

December 10 - Holiday Party at the home of Terri and Peggy
Gable.  Wear your beaded finest and join us for some fun and
holiday cheer.  If you have a beady friend who might like to
join the Bead Society bring her (him?) along.  Look for details
in your monthly meeting notice.

Wear the Design Detective Challenge necklace you made and
have some fun trying to find your own new necklace!  Don’t
forget to bring any leftover beads from the project to return
along with the necklace.  If you cannot attend the party,
please drop off the completed necklace and extra beads at
Studio Baboo before December 10th.

Each year, we collect jewelry to donate to the Woman’s
Shelter so the women staying there over the holidays may
receive a gift from their children.  Please bring your donation
of new, unworn jewelry to the party or drop it off at Studio
Baboo.  Bring your favorite potluck dish and solve your
Design Detective Challenge!

January 9 –Timed Bead Challenge.  Bring a bit of your bead
stash, odds and ends, beading tools, findings and stringing
material.  Everyone will receive "surprise" strand of beads
and be challenged to create a piece of jewelry within a limited
time.  You may swap, trade, and beg beads from fellow
members to complete your project.  It's fun to see what
everyone creates!   While it is not necessary to do so, we will
ask for donations of the evening's projects for the Women's
Shelter.
Findings & Finishings:  As an added bonus, Studio Baboo
will give a brief review of simple to complex finishing
techniques and the findings that make them possible.

February 11 –Swap & Sale: “One person’s trash is another
person’s treasure.”  With beads it’s all beautiful whether trash
or treasure!  Bring your excess beads, books, magazines
and/or tools to sell, swap, trade or give away.  What a great
way to bargain hunt, clear out those beads that you’ve used
over and over again (and never want to see again) and add
some new treasure to your stash!
Gadget Night.  Bring your favorite beading tool - you know,
the one that makes your beadwork easier, faster, more fun.
Studio Baboo will also bring a collection of interesting tools
for you to try out.

March 11 –  World on a String.  We will see the film World on a
String Episode 1: The Eternal Bead.  This award winning
documentary tells the remarkable story of human history
through one of mankind's tiniest creations...the bead.  It is an
awesome saga spanning some 75,000  years.  This 5-part
series weaves a tale though cultures, traditions, religions and
histories all over the globe.  Shot on location on five
continents it presents a truly stunning picture of how a tiny
object transformed human thinking and influenced social
behavior over the eons.  Please note:  This meeting may be
held at an alternate location – watch for your monthly meeting
notice for details.

Design Challenge! We will distribute kits for a new bead
challenge.  Everyone will receive the same beads and the
challenge is to use all of the beads in one project.  You may
add beads to the collection but you must use all of the
challenge beads.  Participants must pay for the kit at the
March meeting and wear (or bring) the finished project to the
May meeting.  All who bring a finished project to the May
meeting will receive a refund of the kit fee!  The kit fee is
$10.00 (payable to the Charlottesville Bead Society).

April 8 – Wrapped Rocks.  Barbara Tilley will show us some
simple wire wrapping techniques.  You won't believe how
easy it is to make almost anything into a stylish pendant –
even a rock!
Library Exhibit.  Once again, Rhetta Beardon has arranged for
the Bead Society to have an exhibit at the library.  The display
will be set up at the end of April and your work will be on
display until the end of May.  We need a variety of beaded
objects for the display.  Each member is invited to submit two
pieces for consideration for the display.  Pieces will be
selected based upon the size limitations of the showcase and
to give the exhibit a cohesive look.  Please write a brief
description of your pieces on an 8 ½” x 11" piece of paper
and tag each piece with your name

May 13 –  Beading Bee.  Bring a project and we’ll chat, share
tips and work out our design problems.  It will be fun to see
what everyone is working on.
Library Exhibit.  Don’t forget to see our work on display
through the whole month of May.

June 10 – Annual Picnic.  Lots of fun and food.  Minerals
Display. Our hostess, Emily Donlon, will show selections from
her collection of mineral specimens.  Emily is very
knowledgeable about the origins and properties of the
minerals and will have lots to tell us about them.
Design Challenge!  Time to show off your bead challenge
creations and get your $10.00 back!   If you are unable to
attend the picnic, you may drop your creation off at Studio
Baboo (or send it with a friend) so we may show it at the
picnic.  You may claim your refund when your necklace is
returned to you.
